Wasp Control

There are different types of wasps, typically the ones that are of greatest concern are the yellowjackets and hornets. Yellowjackets and hornets are known to be the most aggressive and that are known to sting. They pose the greatest nuisance to home and business owners because of the danger posed by their stings.  Stings can actually besides being quite painful cause a quite severe allergic reaction. Because many of these species live in colonies, if one stings you, you may be stung by many. Although most stings cause only minor medical problems, some stings may cause serious medical problems and even death.

Types of Wasp Nests

The type of nest produced by wasps depends on the species of wasp and on the location. Many social wasps produce paper pulp nests on trees, in attics, holes in the ground or other such sheltered areas with access to the outdoors. Wasps have no wax producing glands which makes them different from honey bees. Many wasps create a paper-like substance primarily from wood pulp. Wood fibers are gathered locally from weathered wood, and it is softened by chewing and mixing with their saliva. The pulp is then used to make combs with cells where they reproduce. More commonly, nests are simply burrows in the ground or if constructed, they are constructed from mud. All of these types of nests are commonly throughout Ontario, causing a nuisance for home and business owners.

Yellowjackets are commonly found underground making their removal very difficult. They can also make their nests in old rodent burrows, beneath timber, or within garden rock walls or are attached to a wall of a building. If the nest can be located it is eliminated very carefully by applying a wasp insecticide spray into the nest opening. All wasps will defend their nests but the yellowjackets and hornets are generally the most aggressive when disturbed. You can tell wasps and bees apart by the shape of their bodies. Yellowjackets look very similar to bees but are thinner than the fat bodied bee. When at rest their wings are folded lengthwise on their bodies which is different from bees. The yellow jacket colony remains active for only one season, after which time the queens fly away to start more colonies elsewhere. The wasp nest is not reused and the remaining wasps will die off unlike bees that will use the same hive and return to it year after year.

Paper Wasps

Paper wasps are 3/4 to 1 inch (1.9 to 2.5 cm) long. They construct their nests from fibers from dead wood and from plant stems which they mix with saliva. The water-resistant nests are gray or brown papery material. The umbrella shaped nests are usually found hanging under eaves troughs, roofs and ledges. Paper wasps are also called Umbrella wasps due to the shape of their nests.

Hornets are more difficult to control than the paper wasps and they are far more aggressive. Hornet nests resemble an inverted tear drop shaped bowl usually found hanging from trees, bushes and on sides of buildings. They can be quite nasty when disturbed. Hornet nests can contain literally thousands of wasps that are quite aggressive when disturbed. It is therefore highly recommended to seek professional pest control in order to remove them safely.

Commercial sprays for wasps and hornets

Over the counter sprays can temporarily solve your problem but it is best to get a professional involved so that you can completely and safely eradicate your problem. There are commercial insecticides on the market for use for wasp nests and hornet nests but it is recommended that they be used with extreme caution. Wasps will attack when sensing a poison is being sprayed on their nests.

Precautions such as wearing protective clothing should be taken; wearing clothing that covers the whole body, including gloves and a veil over the face. In addition, you need to wear protective eyewear and other clothing to protect yourself from pesticide hazards. Wasps are most likely to be in the nest at night but even after dark and using formulations that shoot an insecticide stream up to 20 feet, stinging incidents are likely. Underground nests can be quite a distance from the visible opening and agitated Hiring Wasp as your pest control professional will reduce risks to you and your family from receiving wasp stings and especially to prevent ill effects from the dangers of pesticide use.
